Come From Away

Come From Away at Liddy Doenges Theatre at Tulsa Performing Arts Center

A musical about an unexpected landing can still feel remarkably immediate, especially when it is anchored in real people trying to help one another. Come From Away follows the true story of Gander, Newfoundland, after September 11, 2001, when 38 planes were diverted there and strangers from around the world suddenly had to figure out how to live together. That premise gives the show its pull: tension, compassion, awkwardness, humor, and the kind of human connection that can only emerge when ordinary life is interrupted.

Theatre Tulsa is presenting this locally produced work at Liddy Doenges Theatre at Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on November 6, 2026, at 8:00 PM. For anyone exploring Tulsa theatre listings, it offers a clear entry point because the story is both specific and easy to grasp. You do not need to know every detail of the original Broadway run to appreciate why the piece has resonated with audiences. Irene Sankoff and David Hein wrote the book, music, and lyrics, shaping a show that looks closely at kindness, cultural differences, and the shifting bonds between travelers and the people who welcomed them.

That balance of warmth and real-world weight is what makes the musical appealing. It has a strong reputation, including the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and its Broadway run lasted five years and 1,669 performances. Even with that background, the draw here is straightforward: a story built around generosity under pressure, staged by a local company with Tulsa talent.
