Come From Away

Come From Away at Liddy Doenges Theatre at Tulsa Performing Arts Center

A musical built from a real-world emergency can hit with unusual clarity, and Come From Away does exactly that. The show follows the true story of Gander, Newfoundland, after September 11, 2001, when 38 planes were diverted there and strangers from around the world suddenly had to share meals, space, worry, and hope. That setup gives the piece its immediate pull: it is grounded in an extraordinary event, yet it is really about kindness, cultural differences, and the surprising ways people connect when life changes overnight.

Theatre Tulsa is presenting this locally produced production on November 7, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Liddy Doenges Theatre at Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Because this is a locally produced staging, the appeal also includes the community behind it. Theatre Tulsa describes the series as work featuring Tulsa talent, which makes this an especially inviting choice for people who like seeing a familiar story shaped by local artists in local theatre.

Irene Sankoff and David Hein wrote the book, music, and lyrics, and their work has earned strong recognition, including the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The original Broadway run at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre lasted five years and 1,669 performances, a sign of how deeply the material has resonated. Even with that history, the attraction here is simple: a smart, humane musical with humor, warmth, and a clear emotional center that invites reflection without feeling heavy-handed.
